Domain Names

The Domain Name Service (DNS) is the glue that holds the Internet together. Computers understand numbers and people understand words. DNS converts numbers to words and vice versa. Delivery of DNS is divided into two parts:

  • Registration: having a name allocated for your use (casually you can think of this as renting the right to the name for a period of time)
  • Hosting a domain name: this is the actual work of converting names to numbers and vice versa
Clarinet both registers and hosts domain names for our clients. We are happy to do one or both.

Registration

Clarinet works with a number of domain name registrars allowing us to offer the most appropriate registration product for our clients.

Hosting

Clarinet has been in the business of hosting DNS entries for over 10 years. Our DNS servers are geographically and topologically spread out to ensure that your DNS service continues to operate in spite of any local problems with power or data. In the recent past we have noticed a worrying trend towards operating DNS servers out of a single network location. This type of implementation is both recommended against in the Internet's rules (RFCs) and results in avoidable chaos for e-mail and web sites. Clarinet ensures that its name servers are configured to deliver an effective, redundant service, so that your names remain accessible.
