Other ISPs may offer you a "FREE modem" with your ADSL service. We would rather sell you a good modem router, capable of being used many years in the future, at a good price.
This policy was the result of hard won experience. In the early years of ADSL we dealt with a well known brand's low price modem. It was an unmitigated disaster. We ended up junking the stock because in good conscious we could not inflict the flaky unreliable behaviour of that modem on our customers.
