How It Works
At the telephone exchange a device known as a DSLAM generates a frequency tone which is sent over your telephone line. Filters are used at the telephone exchange and at your premises to prevent either the party you are calling or your self from hearing the noise generated by the DSLAM on the phone line. Your ADSL modem undestands the high frequency tones and converts them into data that your computer uses. As the DSLAM and the modem are always on and talking to each other your computer does not need to dial up anymore. Also - so long as you have filters attached in front of your phones - because the DSLAM and modem communicate outside the range of normal conversation, you can conduct phone calls while your Internet connection continues to work.
